The design of the compass emoji may be confused with the Timer Clock emoji that also depicts a numberless face, with the only difference being the red-tipped needle on the compass. Interestingly, before the release of the compass emoji, some users used the clock emojis to talk about compasses in chats and posts. The clock faces also serve more like a compass compared to the fixed needle positions of the actual compass emoji. 12 oโclock to indicate north while 6, 3, and 9 oโclock signify south, east, and west respectively.
Compass is a fully-qualified emoji as part of Unicode 11.0 which was introduced in 2018.
