Sometimes we all need something a little silly just to get us through the day. Doesn’t have to be anything spectacular – a hilarious meme or a funny symbol like a 💨Fart emoji can do the trick, wonderfully breaking us out of our stupor!

No sense denying it – nowadays, most of us are so preoccupied with school or work that we often forget to have fun. We’re here to tell you everything does not have to be serious; you need time to be free, to be foolish, to laugh, to enjoy yourself…just like a carefree child!

If you grew up watching cartoons, the 💨Fart emoji is something you’re probably familiar with. No, we’re not out to ruin your childhood, your favorite characters did not have gassy tummies all the time. Remember the puff of smoke Roadrunner leaves behind when running away from Wile E Coyote? Or when Bugs Bunny tries not to get caught by Elmer Fudd?

Of course, those things aren’t farts, they’re puffs of smoke going in one direction, but if you take a closer look, you’ll see that the gust of wind billows up into an imagined, fart-like shape! That’s probably what emoji designers noticed, too, when, in a random stroke of genius, they put two and two together and created the hilarious 💨Dashing Away emoji.

Fart Emoji 101

The 💨Dashing Away emoji, also known as the 💨Fart emoji, is a cartoonish burst of wind, an illustration of a small gray cloud with motion lines flowing to the left. However, it’s not only used to describe farts, the symbol represents smoking, speed, and various types of wind, broken or blown, too.

It’s All In The Wind

When you want to show a person or a vehicle that’s in a hurry, share the emoji to explain and emphasize your message. Don’t want to argue with someone online? Share the fart emoji to show you’re in no mood to banter.

The story behind the fart emoji is a great example of how emojis today provide users with complex options for a wide array of situations. While some have a fairly simple definition, others come with more than one meaning, and sometimes that meaning STILL needs to be deciphered.

Therefore, if you are not up to date with all the emojis out there, you better get ready for a lot of confusion! All the more so when you have kids or deal with the youth on a regular basis. Among younger generations, emojis are so popular that they have virtually replaced words in texts and social media posts, often to the consternation of some members of the older generation.

Thankfully, you won’t have to deal with that, as long as you know how to educate yourself. Sites like Emojiguide make it easy to be on top of things by featuring, deciphering, and differentiating all the newest and hottest emojis out there. For instance, most users interchange the fart emoji with the 🌬️Wind Face emoji.

By looking at just the name of the emoji, one can already see just how different the two really are. The 🌬️Wind Face emoji shows the side of a blue human face, usually female, blowing wind to the right. On some platforms, such as Apple and Twitter, the face is white instead. Because the emoji is often female, people associate this with Mother Nature. Also, people often use this to refer to the wind, clouds, or fog. In relation to this, some also use this to describe windy or cloudy weather.

Fart Emoji Origin

Let’s start at the very beginning. Users were first acquainted with the Fart emoji when it entered the digital world as part of Unicode 6.0. This was back in 2010. The Unicode Consortium, the organization in charge of approving and releasing new emojis, provides the icon with the name “Dash Symbol”.

Fart Emoji Across Platforms

When Apple incorporated the emoji to their system, to coincide with the launch of iOS 2,2, the second major release of the iOS mobile operating system, Apple programmers let go of the original name, “Dash Symbol,” and re-labeled the product, “Gust Of Wind” Other platforms followed suit, giving names like “Fast,” ”Steam,” “Vaping,” and “Wind.”

All major platforms designed the fart emoji with a puffy cloud facing right, and a group of droplets to the left side of the cloud. But that’s where the similarities end. To complement the basic design provided by Unicode, all major vendors that adopted the fart emoji “made it their own,” by tweaking the color and overall design of the icon, in alignment with the platform’s general market, brand identity, and audience.

Twitter, JoyPixels, and Windows’ Wonderful Colors

When it comes to shades, tints, and hues, Twitter’s and JoyPixel’s models are the most different. Twitter’s fart emoji is in one solid color, a light, pretty baby blue, while JoyPixel’s model is a mixture of blue and white. On the other hand, the artwork on Windows’ icon stands out the most in its own way because it is the only version in black and white.

Facebook’s Fluffy Design

Interestingly, out of all the platforms displaying the fart emoji, Samsung and Apple’s designs are the ones that look most alike. The two resemble puffy, dark rain clouds and have similar shades of blue, gray, and white. That said, what makes them different? Samsung’s icon has a bigger white center and lighter border colors, while Facebook’s version is quite bouncy and puffy, in fact, it’s the bounciest and puffiest design of them all.

Brain Farts

These types of farts aren’t as bad smelling as the ones coming out of your butt, but they’re just as, sometimes even more, embarrassing. Imagine you’re placing an order for a meal, or discussing a report at work. All of a sudden, the words suddenly stop coming! Worse, you start spitting nonsensical nonsense that makes no sense. That is what you call a brain fart. Ladies and gentlemen, brain farts do exist. And they happen to everyone. When you find yourself in these types of situations, the best thing to do is to do what you would do after a gassy fart – own up to your mistake, apologize, and move on.

Everyone has an embarrassing fart. You know the one, the one that comes out of nowhere at the worst possible time. Maybe you’re on a first date or in a business meeting when BAM it happens! Sure, it sucks, but it’s something we all go through.

Here’s the good part- if you’re being smart about it, you can use a collective human experience (like farting) to establish a better online presence for yourself. For instance, you can ask your followers to share their most cringe-worthy fart story, and ask them to place a fart emoji at the end. Or to get the ball rolling, you can share one of your own farty stories!
