flag: Yemen 🇾🇪

The Yemen Flag emoji is a representation of the country’s national flag with a simple tricolor design. Its band colors from top to bottom are red, white, and black. It is said that the black band represents its dark past, as it was once divided into two states—the north being an Arab republic while the south, a British colony. The red band symbolizes the blood of martyrs and the struggle towards achieving unity while the white band stands for hope of a bright future.

Did you know that Yemen briefly went through a civil war back in 1986? Soon afterwards, the independent republic north united with the communist south on May 22, 1990 known as the Yemeni Unification. This unification gave birth to the Republic of Yemen that we know today. On the map, you will find the country in Western Asia towards the south of the Arabian Peninsula.

This country of almost 30 million, unfortunately, is in its seventh year of conflict. In 2021, almost 10% of children 4 years old and under are said to experience severe malnutrition. The economic crisis is also resulting in urgent humanitarian needs and famine. That said, we can always use the Yemen Flag emoji when referring to people, places, or things of this country as well as raising awareness on how to extend our humanitarian support!

🇾🇪 Flag: Yemen is a fully-qualified emoji as part of Unicode 6.0 which was introduced in 2010, and was added to Emoji 2.0.
