Google released the first and original set of 79 emoji characters in 2008. Designed by Susie Sahim and Ryan Germick, these animated symbols were first called “goomoji”. Google emojis have risen in popularity since then. The multinational conglomerate has over 3,000 emojis that users can avail on stock Android devices like Pixel Phones, Gmail Web Interface, Google Hangouts and ChromeOS.

 

 

History Of Google Emojis

Google emojis have gone through 11 updates. Its most recent revision coincided with the release of Android 10.0 last September 3, 2019. Updates in this release included full support for Emoji 12.0, and several design changes including gender-neutral versions of many emojis.

- Google Android 9.0 was released on August 6, 2018. It was part of the latest update to Google Android Pie (9.0), and was the first release to support Emoji 11.0. Some changes to the designs of the Google emojis included the pistol emoji- switching from a photo of a weapon to an illustration of an orange water squirt gun, and the removal of eggs from the green salad emoji.

 

- Google Android 8.1 was released on December 5, 2019. It was not released together with any software update. Some changes included new burger, beer, and cheese emoji designs.

 

- One of the biggest changes to the Google emoji world happened on August 21, 2017. On that day, Google released a complete redesign of every emoji, including a transformation of all “blob” smileys into a more common circle shape. Google rolled out these emojis together with Android Oreo, the 15th version of its Android mobile operating system which was released at that time.

 

- Introduced on October 20, 2016, Android 7.1 was the first Android release to include, in its list of Google emojis, single-parent family emojis, gendered emojis, and a Rainbow Flag emoji.

 

- Another big update happened on November 3, 2014. Android 4.4, the eleventh version of the Android mobile operating system representing release version 4.4, was introduced to the public. Android 4.4 was the first release from Google to include support for color emoji designs. It also introduced a new blob-like gumdrop emoji which is used for various gestures and smileys.
