How do screen readers read emojis?

Screen readers read the official Unicode name of the emoji. A screen reader encountering 😀 will say “Grinning Face”, and 🎉 will read as “Party Popper”.

This means emojis are fully accessible — but overusing them can make a message exhausting to listen to (imagine 50 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 being spoken one by one).
