Are emojis a language?

Linguists generally say no — emojis lack the grammar, tense and structure needed to form a full language. But emojis function a lot like gestures, tone of voice and facial expression in spoken conversation: they color the meaning of what we write.

Some researchers call emoji a paralanguage — a layer that rides on top of ordinary text.
